Game Review :
About 25 hours in the previous version, more than 100 on the PS4 version. This is THE fighting game that made me want to be good. I had looked through Tekken, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear and much more, but none compared to Under Night when I first picked it up. It is so polished, intricate and yet easy to pick up. Obviously, at this point, UNIST is the version you should pick up. Basically, what it adds from UNIEL is a full rebalancing, four new characters, 15 new colors for each character, a complex and massive tutorial mode (one of the best I’ve ever seen) and a full visual novel to give context to the battles and a full story at the same time.
The characters are balanced to the point where if you get knocked easily online, you know it’s not because of the matchup, but because of the punishable choices you made. On the other hand, good decisions will reward you greatly for doing so. On top of that, it boasts a generous 20 characters that are each so incredibly different and unique in playstyle.
The basics of any fighting game are present on the surface, but under the hood, so many intricate systems work together to make things interesting. Now those are mechanics you don’t need to know at all to enjoy. But if you want to learn more about the game and get real good, there is a plethora of tactics to find out.
Obviously, this is a big recommendation from me. Whether you never picked up a fighting game and want to learn about them, the tutorial is there. And if you’re a veteran and want to try one of the most polished, underappreciated FG, this is it.
