Game Review :
Overall I enjoyed the game. The story is, like all obsidian games, really well written and compelling. I really enjoyed exploring the world, getting to know the characters, and the lore present in the game. Dialogue in the game is very important, and affects factions and characters opinion of you which has game-changing consequences. I found myself carefully considering the options, and how I wanted my character to procede for even minor conversations. This made the game incredibly immerive.
The premise is excellent too, it’s great to revel in your characters’ evilness – the game allows you do indulge in some truly despicable behaviour! There are some caveats. The AI for you allies is somewhat brain dead, turning off the AI and pausing the game to issue commands yields much better results. In general, combat could be better: that is not to say it is appaulling, but I found one combat strategy fit for all skirmishes in the game. Magic feels very powerful, so there is little incentive to switch up your party or develop different strategies. This can make combat somewhat repetitive in places – although I never felt it dragged too much, but could see gameplay focused gamers getting frustrated.I saw some other reviews took issue with the length.
My first playthrough lasted about 25 hours. To be honest, I quite liked the length: I don’t want every RPG to be a 100 hour epic. There is not much filler either, and I felt the length of the game was fairly reflected in the price – so no complaints here.If you like storytelling and lore this game is easy to recommend (especially if discounted), if you are primarily motivated by gameplay mechanics I would probably suggest looking elsewhere.
