Shadow of the Tomb Raider is fitting title. This third entry of the rebooted series is a shadow of what came before. Rise brilliantly corrected all the small issues in the original TR reboot and expounded upon the core mechanics to make a cohesive and well-balanced adventure.
Graphically, it’s a show-stopper. So much vibrant detail. If you have the ability to play in 4k/60fps on ultra with HDR, you are in for a visual feast. Honestly, that is what got me as far in the game as I got – I just wanted to see what was next. Eventually, the gameplay got the in way. :/
Sadly, Shadow tries to up the ante in a reboot series that already met its pinnacle form in the second release. Controls feel ever so loose compared to Rise, the pacing and time in-between fight/exploration/tomb sections feels uneven, and I don’t know how many more games I can handle with a “hide in the tall grass mechanic to be invisible to enemies” mechanic.
I loved TR and ROTR – played through both at least twice, and loved every second. SOTR just feels overdone and over focus tested – “Hey, it has guns and arrows! A+ AAA title!” Maybe I’m being harsh, but I would have liked a bit more return to form for Lara instead of this brooding, melodramatic, murder machine Square has turned her into. I’m over this Lara and am already ready for, what will essentially be, reboot 3.
Again, not a “bad” game, but an overall disappointment in originality. Then again, if you’re really into stealth killing thousands of enemies a third time with a bow and arrow, have at it. I’ve personally had my fill. Wish there was a “meh” ratiting. As it is, I’d recommend a pass; especially if you played a lot of the first two games in the reboot. If this is your first foray into the reboot series, or somehow missed Rise (which I recommend over this if it is your first game in the series), you may like it a lot more than I did.
